How would you describe your work?

Soft and squishy!  So damn cute and lovable that it’s hard to resist the temptation to smile and squeeze my plush creations.   I call them sneak attack smiles.

How long have you been creating plush goodness and when did you get your start?

I started sewing when I was 12, I taught myself how to sew at a table setup under the stairs.  I’d use whatever scrap fabric I could come across. To this day I have no idea how to read a pattern or follow instructions. I just sit down with a pile of fabric, an idea and hope it all works out.  My first plush creature was a blue polka dot octopus that I named OctoPussy (you can see him in the photos) which I made in 2008.  From there my mind has just created these creatures in dreams and I make up names and stories for each of them.

Favorite project you’ve worked on?

‘Life’s Not Fair but the Food is Good’ was fun and I’m pretty sure I giggled the entire time I was sewing. Who doesn’t love corn-dogs!?

Anything awesome you’re looking forward to in the near future?

I’m currently in production mode. Trying to make plush designs I can recreate multiples of. Really hoping that a local shop in Louisville will start selling some of my plush creatures.  At the moment I have soft goodness piling up and keeping me company.

3 favorite artist/artistic influences?

This may change at anytime but at this particular moment in time and in no order:

  • Alice Neel-I wish i could capture people with my camera the way she does with her brush.
  • Lenka-if you can listen to her and not smile….nope, it’s impossible. She’s fucking cute and her music is super cute!
  • Vincent van Gogh-hate to be cliche but when I stand in front of his work I want to get lost in his world.  The bold colors and  impasto brush strokes will forever make me see the world in a different manner.

What have you been watching lately?

The Office, It’s Always Sunny, LOST, Coraline, UP, and Edward Scissor Hands

What’s a typical day like for you?

ALARM GOES OFF. Snuggle with kitties (Kurt and Edgar are the loves of my life).  Coffee. Food. Work. Food. Friends. Giggle. Coffee. Fabric. Photos. Smiles. Food. *shy smile*. Manufacture Zzzz’s.

A BIG special thanks to Lisa Oechsli for her amazing photographic skills. She is a very dear and talented friend who was willing to shoot photos of me half naked rolling around in a pile of stuffed animals. She’s pretty much amazing and would love to take your photo as well!
